About Wandering Iceland...

Wandering Iceland's story...

Wandering Iceland was born of a desire to slow everything down a little. We create tours for those who go on holiday to relax, discover, experience and...wander.

We are a small, family company. And we are not trying to pretend to be anything else. You will mostly be guided by Kelso, or by one of our close friends.

That way, all of our tours provide a more personal experience for our wonderful clients.

The Slow Travel Movement perfectly describes our approach, defined as follows:

"Slow Travel is a mindset that rejects traditional ideas of tourism and encourages you to soak in your environments and keep yourself open to new experiences." (theartofslowtravel.com)

Sustainable Tourism is another key concept for us. This is much more than purely "Eco Tourism":

"Sustainable tourism is the concept of visiting a place as a tourist and trying to make only a positive impact on the environment, society and economy."
(Travel tips, USAtoday.com)

Wandering Iceland guides "Travellers" - those seeking to "learn" and "experience". The term "Tourist" implies those more seeking "entertainment".

Included in all Wandering Iceland tours:
  • A warming hot drinkcoffee, hot chocolate or tea
  • Taste of local foods/alcohol
  • A big hit of wilderness and fresh air
  • A strong local element

Kelso:

Chief guide, born wanderer. He came to these shores many years ago in search of wilderness, volcanoes, glaciers, vikings...

He found them, of course. And much more besides.

Photographing Iceland's wild, primeval landscape and hiking the many deserted, unspoiled trails are among Kelso's favourite distractions.

Guiding is his passion, his way of life. With 16 year's experience guiding in Iceland, on glaciers, in caves, over mountains, you are sure of an interesting, educational and entertaining experience.

He is Wilderness First Responder qualified. Which means you are in safe hands.

Kelso wants to share with you the secrets and stories of this incredible island. Above all he longs to help others discover their own Iceland.

Kæja: (Pronounced "Kaeya")

Chief maker of dreams. She has an amazing ability to turn aims and aspirations in to reality... Kæja loves to interweave the present with the past, to blend Icelandic culture with tourism

She shares Kelso's passion for wandering, exploring possibilities for deeper, total experiences. Together they are developing their dream of a greener, more eco-friendly tour company.

Slow travel, they believe is the future for Iceland.

"Not all those who wander are lost."

J.R.R. Tolkien
